Oconto County Juvenile Detention Information

The Juvenile Correctional Institution is used only when there is a risk to the safety of the community, the youth will be detained in either the Lincoln Hills School for boys or the Copper Lake School for girls. These locations are slated to close and will be replaced with smaller facilities that are within more populated areas, keeping the youth close to their families for contact and to be within their own community. While at these locations they will be provided with all of their basic needs, including food, education, medical care, mental health care, and recreational and physical education times each day. Both indoor and outdoor recreation spaces are provided for youth to engage in activities and social interactions. Before incarceration is considered alternatives will be attempted such as community service, housing outside of the home in foster care, restitution, and supervision within the home and school. Reintegration and aftercare are also provided for each of the youth who are incarcerated before and after they leave as they transition back into their community, with a focus on family, community, and following the conditions of release. Mail: Youth are able to receive mail at either of the locations, and they will be able to respond to letters and postcards each week or each day. Telephone: Telephones are available during free time only and may be used to call parents or guardians. Visitation: Visiting hours and days will vary depending on the facility that they are housed in, with these details being provided only to the parents or guardians upon intake, and as they transition to new facilities that will continue.
