The 1,000-bed Milwaukee County Central Jail houses detainees who are waiting for their trial or who have been sentenced to a term of detention. While there, they are encouraged to attend programs that will provide education, life skills, and social skills, as well as to remain in contact with their family and friends to maintain a support system for after they are released.
The Milwaukee Public School System provides teachers to help inmates maintain an education if they are incarcerated and charged as an adult, or within the juvenile system, and many volunteers provide additional services including general education, health education, faith based services, support groups for drugs and alcohol use as well as domestic violence support groups, and anger management.
All medical and mental health needs are met by trained and certified staff, with emergency needs being transported to a local hospital and back after treatment.
A commissary is provided and may be funded by friends or family via phone call to 866-345-1884 or online, as well as at the kiosk located in the lobby or at other locations.
Inmates will also be provided with a tablet that offers phone calls, video visits, access to reading material and educational resources, along with other media.

Postcards
The Milwaukee County Central Jail allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature.
Envelopes
The Milwaukee County Central Jail also allows envelopes to be mailed to inmates as well, as long as there is nothing in the envelope except letters, drawings and tasteful photos. Greeting cards are not permitted. Envelopes may include a Money order or Cashier's Check made out to the inmate. This will be retained by Staff and applied to the inmate's commissary account.

Newspapers
This jail allows inmates to receive newspapers in the mail as long as it is a subscription and send directly from the publishers.
Magazines
This jail allows inmates to receive magazines in the mail as long as it is a subscription and send directly from the publishers. The jail prohibits inmates from receiving the following magazines: Playboy, Penthouse, Maxim and any weapons magazines
Books
This jail will allow inmates to receive softcover/paperback books from the following publisher only: Penguin Random House. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million etc, are not approved and any books sent by these places will be refused and the inmate will not get them. Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Milwaukee County Central Jail standards will be disposed of.
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
