Marathon County Juvenile Facility Information

The Marathon County Juvenile Facility is located in Wausau, Wisconsin and houses up to 20 juveniles who are charged with a crime or who are sentenced to detention. It accepts youth who are aged 10 to 17 years old, and they house male and female detainees separately. Detention of youth is the last choice for the court system, and they will attempt to use alternatives to detention as well as deterrents and early interventions whenever possible. Early intervention begins in the homes and schools with preventative programming, presentations in schools, and support for families when they need it. Where those aren’t successful alternatives to detention will be attempted before detention is considered and this may include one or more alternatives including community service, restitution, home or electronic monitoring, school visits and check ins, treatments for substance use, and day programs. If it is determined that detention is required, they will be placed in the juvenile facility where they will be placed on a strict schedule and expected to attend school and engage in their treatments.
