Within the Kittitas County Public Safety Building is the Kittitas County Jail. It was opened in the 1980s and housed only 45 inmates, but an expansion in 2012 added an Annex that increased the maximum capacity to 209. A work program offers an opportunity for minimum security inmates to remain an active and contributing member of the community, as well as a work release program, GED, school release for those who are attending outside classes, and a work crew. It is key for inmates to feel as though they are still valued in the community to boost mental health during incarceration and improve the reintegration process. Contact with friends and family is also encouraged and can make the transition easier both when beginning a sentence as well as finishing one.
