Norfolk Juvenile Detention Center Information

Norfolk Juvenile Detention Center accepts both male and female young offenders who are aged 12-20 with 64 beds in their pre-dispositional section. Of the 64 available beds, 48 are designated for male offenders and 16 for female offenders, and they are split into housing units that include a common area and provide a set group of individuals that will eat together, attend class together, and enjoy recreational time together. Within the post-dispositional section there are 16 beds for male or female offenders, all of whom are aged 14-18. They will be assigned to the facility for a term that will not exceed 6 months, as determined by the court. This decision is reviewed each month. Outreach is also provided through this facility, and it allows for youth to avoid detention by participating in counseling, school, community activities, and any required treatment programs. Medical care and educational services are provided, and this includes providing ongoing medication as well as addressing new medical needs. Mental health referrals are provided to ensure that the mental and emotional health of the youth are also cared for.
