About the Henry County Adult Detention Center
Henry County has a large detention center that has the capacity to house up to 400 inmates at any one time. It is operated by the sheriff’s office in the county, and is located in Martinsville, VA. This building was completed in 2022 and has been operational since March 25 of that year. As a full service location, it offers several different housing options within the facility, including minimum security pods, medium security, and maximum security cells, along with the local Work Release program. Offering each level of security allows the jail to house both those who are awaiting their trial and those who are serving a full sentence and can meet the needs of each. Inmates who qualify and are sentenced to the work release program are housed in a separate section and will be permitted to leave the premises each day to attend work, with a limited amount of time given to get to work and return, as well as being permitted to have the clothing items that are required for their job. Pay is tracked and used to pay chid support and court fees as needed, and a tracking device is worn so they can be located if they are late or do not return as expected. Provided with three meals each day, access to medical care, laundry, clothing, bedding, and a commissary, all of the basic needs of inmates are provided for. A full medical wing offers a lab as well as a pharmacy, along with exam rooms, emergency treatment spaces, mental health area, and more to assist in decreasing trips to the hospital and keeping all inmates healthy and cared for. Inmates are also encouraged to communicate with their loved ones while they are incarcerated, as a way to maintain relationships, improve mental health, and keep a support system for after their release. Recent changes to the mail policy now require that mail be sent to the Henry County Adult Detention Center, with the inmate name and ID number, at Facility ID Number 5094, PO Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419. This address delivers the mail to a third party service that will open each piece of mail, check for contraband, ad then scan the mail into the electronic delivering system. Use of this system removes the possibility of contraband making it into the jail through the mail and offers inmates an efficient way to access their mail at the kiosks or tablets that are present in the housing units. Inmates can also respond to this mail immediately via instant message from that tablet, reducing the response times between sending mail and receiving a response.
