About the Bristol Virginia Jail
Since it opened in 1970, the Bristol Virginia Jail has operated as a maximum security facility that houses inmates both male and female who have been sentenced to incarceration from juvenile court, general district court, and circuit court. Through agreements with the US Marshalls and federal agencies they also house inmates for other law enforcement as needed. As a part of the rehabilitation programming and to manage the budget efficiently, several inmates are given tasks or jobs to complete during their incarceration in order to help with jail operations and with projects outside of the facility. Kitchen and laundry service both use inmates to complete their tasks, as well as a jail farm, maintaining abandoned properties, and working with the city vehicles and grounds, all help to give tasks to inmates and provide them a way to learn new employable skills during their incarceration. Additionally, the jail works with the VINE program to allow those who are involved in a case, from family members to victims and police officers, to register for updates on an inmate. This will send a notification of release dates, transfers, and more. Inmates are permitted to make phone calls from the jail but are unable to receive phone calls, and all numbers must be listed on their approved phone list. The phones are accessible each day from the end of the morning clean-up of the space and cells though to 11pm. Each call can be 15 minutes long, and they are all prepaid which can be accessed through securustech.net. As well as phone calls to their loved ones, inmates are permitted to have visitors each week, and each visit will be 30 minutes long, with an additional visit for main holidays. Males will receive visits on weekends from 8am until 12pm and female inmates can have visits Saturdays and Sundays between 1pm and 3pm.
