The 40-bed Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention, which can be expanded to 80 beds in the future, operates two programs that run at the same time but offer different services and results. A post disposition program is a 90 day program that houses youth for up to 90 days to complete their commitment, and a 180 day program is a longer program for those who are committed to the program and were not successful in shorter or community based services. A community placement program also operates at in the same location offering a 3-12 month program for males who are aged 16-20 during the last months of their release. It improves educational competency and increases their preparedness for employment and their employability. There is a focus on self-control, decision making, and problem solving to prepare them for the transition back into the community. A garden program offers an opportunity for youth in either program to learn how to garden and enjoy the harvest that they create. Along with education and physical education, youth will also have access to religious services and be able to work with community services to learn new skills and attend presentations from groups such as Planned Parenthood and AA. Mental health professionals provide clinical services for residents, and there is a full time nurse and a part time physician to provide medical care.
