About the Purgatory Correctional Facility

The Washington County Jail is better known by its official name; the Purgatory Correctional Facility.

It is a full service holding and detention facility that houses inmates, both male and female, while they are waiting to make bail, while they are waiting for their sentencing, or as they are serving a sentence of one year or less. As the local arresting agency who receives the inmates from local law enforcement, the Sheriff’s office is responsible for the operations of the jail and they manage all day to day functions. Beyond basic security and safety measures to ensure the health and safety of both inmates and staff, they also check all incoming mail (postcards only - no letters in envelopes) to remove all contraband, returning any mail that does not meet the strict requirements, as well as ensure there are three healthy meals each day, access to commissary items, monitor phone calls and interactions, and supervise visits.

The 560 bed Purgatory Correctional Facility is located at 750 South 5300 West in Hurricane, Utah 84737, They can be reached by phone 24 hours a day by calling 435-656-6600. It was built in 1998 at a cost of $11.5 million. It is staffed by approximately 150 people. You may think the name of Purgatory has some type of religious meaning, but it does not. In this case the jail is located near Purgatory Flats, Utah, thus the name.

Located nearby is the Fairgrounds Industrial Park, the Quail Creek Industrial Park, the Washington County Department of Motor Vehicles, Washington County Regional Fair Park which includes a horse racing track called Dixie Downs, and the Southern Utah Shooting Sports Park.

Inmates, who can be searched for online, are provided with recreational time and space to exercise as a way to both fill the hours as well as to maintain their health, both physical and mental. All photographs must be clearly marked with the inmate's and inmate #, and may only be 5 by 7 inches or smaller, with books and magazines only being accepted by delivery direct from the publisher or distributer. Books and periodicals may not be sent from home addresses due to the risk of tampering and contraband. Bail can be paid at the jail itself, in either cash or bail bond if one is required, and the processing and release of an inmate may take a few hours to the next day before they are released.

To support an inmate who is unable to make bond or who has been denied bail, funds may be added to their account both at the jail in person or online at jailatm.com. Any person who is listed to receive phone calls or visits from one inmate may not add money to the account of another inmate, and to add funds to more than one account it is necessary to get permission from the facility itself. This can help to prevent illegal interactions among inmates and will work towards the safety of the environment. To receive phone calls from an inmate an account can be made for them at gettingout.com and once funds have been added inmates may call anyone who is on their approved calling list anytime from 9 am until 10pm, at which time the phones will be closed until morning. Any inmate who is in isolation or who is being confined to their cell for disciplinary reasons will have limited access to the phones.

Another alternative to communicate with an inmate is to plan visits, which are done via online video conferencing and can be conducted by any smartphone, tablet, or computer that has internet access and a camera. These are also funded through gettingout.com and all potential visitors must fill out a visitation application and wait for their approval before they can schedule a visit. By conducting visits through this program there is an increased flexibility on the days and times that visits are available, with it most often mirroring the times that the phone banks are available, 9am until 10pm, with exceptions for when the inmate is eating, in class, or facing disciplinary restriction.

All current inmates are listed on the website for the jail, as well as those who have been released in the last 14 days, allowing those who are concerned for an inmate or involved in a case to remain up to date on the status of that inmate.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Purgatory Correctional Facility?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Purgatory Correctional Facility uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Purgatory Correctional Facility first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
Inmate's Full Name & Inmate ID #
Purgatory Correctional Facility
750 S 5300 W
Hurricane, UT 84737

Option 4 - Make an Inmate Deposit with Jail ATM over the Phone by calling 877-810-0914
To do this you will need the inmate's offender # (inmate ID #) and full legal name.
