About the Salt Lake County Metro Jail
Located within the city of Salt Lake, the Salt Lake County Metro Jail is operated by the local Sheriff and has a large staff of fully trained personnel. This facility is used for housing inmates from their first booking after arrest through to their release after they have served their entire sentence. Several programs are operating to assist in the rehabilitation of inmates in the hopes they will reduce recidivism rates and to ease the transition back into society after their release. These programs include education programs, vocational training, work experience in cooperation with community groups and systems to support life skills. Several programs are also available after use. The housing units in the facility are separated into classes based upon the security needs and the seriousness of the charges. There are three quarantine units for those who need to be separated from the general population, four pod units that have individual or double cells, and a holding unit where inmates are held until they have been classified and assigned to a unit. Two dormitory style units are also present where inmates are housed together in an open space with the dayroom, rather than cells positioned around the dayroom, which accommodate those with non-violent crimes. Each of the dormitories have 80 kitchen workers, GED unit has 64 inmates, and there are health pods and housing for mental health within that. Crisis intervention training is provided to all staff within the medical unit and each inmate is treated with respect and humanity at all times. There are three main ways that friends and family can communicate with inmates including via outgoing phone calls, email, and mail, in addition to visits. To communicate by phone there are phones located within each housing unit that are available from 7 am until 9:30 each night, and inmates can make 15 minute calls to those who are on their approved list and as long as they have funds on their account that is maintained through web.connectnetwork.com. Accounts can be created at OffenderConnect to send electronic messages to inmates that they are able to access during the day. Mail can also be sent through US Postal Service and will be checked for contraband before being passed to the inmate, with a full list of what is not allowed provide on the website for the jail. To visit an inmate all visitors must be on the approved visiting list and must follow the regulations including dressing appropriately and arriving a few minutes early to clear security. Visiting hours occur from 9am until 9pm with two visits being permitted each week per inmate, and each pod will have a day that they have visits. There are five choices for putting money on an inmate's books that can be used for communication services:

Postcards
The Salt Lake County Metro Jail allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. It is best to only use blue or black ink. Always include your name and return address.

Envelopes
The Salt Lake County Metro Jail also allows envelopes to be mailed to inmates. It is best to only use blue or black ink.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Salt Lake County Metro Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Salt Lake County Metro Jail standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.

Do Inmates in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail have Access to Tablets or Computers?

Salt Lake County Metro Jail allows inmates access to tablets to use for the services provided by 'gettingout'.


The devices are similar to common handheld tablets, but are made exclusively by GettingOut, a GTL / Viapath company.
Tablets offer specialized content and services for inmates to use during their stay at Salt Lake County Metro Jail, such as:

  • Music
  • Books
  • Games
  • Education
  • News
  • Radio
  • Television
  • Read mail and messages
  • Video visits

-  Free services are already available for use on the device at Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
-  Subscription services are funded separately by family and friends with deposits made into an inmate’s Debit Link account.
-  Salt Lake County Metro Jail Inmates will then be able to purchase subscription services and premium content to enjoy.

How Inmates Can Use a Tablet to Access Services at Salt Lake County Metro Jail

To find out how to get access to a tablet for inmate read the following:

1.  First, Register or Sign In to GettingOut/GTL

2.  Purchase the services you want for your Salt Lake County Metro Jail inmate.
3. All inmates have free access to the tablets to read their letters from family & friends, but there are many other services available to keep your inmate busy while incarcerated... such as Games, Books, Music and Movies.
