It houses both male and female offenders in it's three large buildings in the east end of Abilene, Texas, just north of the area known as South Treadway. Adjacent to the Abilene Animal Services Adoption Center, and the Taylor County Juvenile Detention Center, it has been operational since 1984 when the old jail was abandoned.
The old jail by the way, built in 1931, was located at 341 Pecan Street in Abilene. It was finally demolished in July of 2020.
OLD TAYLOR COUNTY JAIL
The Taylor County Detention Center, located at 910 S. 27th in Abilene, TX 79602, houses minimum, medium and maximum security inmates of both sexes. You can reach the jail 24 hours a day by calling 325-691-7423, and have options to either hear recorded information about visitation, or can speak to a stff member if you have specific questions that we cannot answer in the sections below this one.
The detention center has a serious overcrowding issue that they have been trying to deal with for years. The problem is that the jail is full, and the methamphetamine issue in Taylor County is exploding, bringing in more inmates due the crimes that these meth users are engaging in. And it's not just men, it's women as well. In fact out of the 874 beds, the jail needs an additional 60 beds or more just for women. The total number of beds needed for women is at least 212.
Typically women make up only 10% of a jail's population, but in Taylor County it's almost double that due to the meth drug issue.
To solve the problem of the expansion, the city of Abilene donated 3.6 acres next door to the jail for the expansion, and the county commissioners approved the money for it. Hopefully the expansion, pictured in the pink highlighted image area below, will be ready by 2025. Until then the Sheriff is spending $100,000 month just to transport and house 60 female inmates in neighboring county jails that have the room.
You can look up any inmate housed in the Taylor County Detention Center in the Jail Records and Inmate Roster portion of the Taylor County Court Records Inquiry portal. There you will be able to see the offender's mugshots, criminal charges, court case numbers, and any bond.
