About the Grimes County Jail

The Jail Division of the Grimes County Sheriff's Office is overseen by Jail Administrator Lt. Michael Briggs, with additional supervision provided by Sgt. Elsa Magnus and Sgt. Angelica Alfaro. The division consists of a staff of 22 jailers and 1 nurse, all of whom meet the requirements for licensing as jailers through the TCLEOSE.

The old Grimes County Jail facility became operational in December 1998, but has now been replaced with the $10.4 million, 32,000 jail and Justice Center, which includes the Sheriff's Office.

The jail has a capacity to house 111 inmates, including both males and females charged with misdemeanors and felonies. Some inmates are awaiting trial, while others have been convicted and are awaiting transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Inmates have access to religious services and library resources through volunteer programs. The jail also operates two inmate work programs: the diversion work program, which provides community services, and the garden project, which allows inmates to cultivate produce for the jail's kitchen.

To send money to an inmate, the Grimes County Jail only accepts money orders or cashier's checks made out to the Inmate Trust Fund. The inmate's name must be noted on the money order or cashier's check, and the sender's name, address, and phone number should appear in the "sender" section. Personal letters should not be enclosed in the same envelope as the money order or cashier's check. For correspondence, letters should be addressed to:

Grimes County Jail

A new facility was built in 2021, which provides a secure connection from the jail to the new court space. This secure walkway eliminates the need for inmates to be transported outside when going from the jail to court, making the process more convenient and secure.

Inmates at this jail are offenders who have been arrested in Grimes County that were recently charged with a felony or misdemeanor, are awaiting trial, or have been found guilty for their crime(s) and have been sentenced to one year or less.

Inmate services include money deposit, video visitation, digital email messaging and outgoing phone calls.

How do I find out if someone has been arrested and booked into the Grimes County Jail?

To find out if someone you know has been recently arrested and booked into the Grimes County Jail, call the jail’s booking line at 936-873-2151.

There may be an automated method of looking them up by their name over the phone, or you may be directed to speak to someone at the jail. Sometimes the jail staff may ask you the offender’s date of birth to ensure privacy of the offender’s status.

Keep in mind that after an arrest, the information on an offender may not be publicly available for several hours.

If you don’t want to check up on an offender by calling the jail, you can also try looking up people recently booked online.

Grimes County Jail Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Grimes County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Grimes County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Grimes County Jail?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Grimes County and other Texas and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Grimes County Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Grimes County Jail Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

The Grimes County Sheriff recommends that you use a bail bond agent licensed to do business in Grimes County.

  • You can pay a cash bond yourself, or use your home in Grimes County, or in some cases the state of Texas, but the benefit of using a bail bond agent is that they take responsibility for making sure the inmate shows up for court in Grimes County, and if they don't, then they take the financial responsibility. If you are paying the bond yourself, cashier’s checks or money orders should be made payable to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.
  • The typical fee for a bond will be between 10-20% of the bail amount; usually 15%.  So if an offender has a bail of $10,000.00, their bond will be $1500.00.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Grimes County Jail?

There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:

Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail

Bring money to the jail in person.

Jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment.

Grimes County Jail has a Tiger Kiosk in the Lobby that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

If you can't get your questions answered online call the Grimes County Jail at 936-873-2151.

Choice 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

Grimes County Jail and others often use a private company to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Go to the online site for depositing funds. You will need to register an account, which is free to do and use a debit/credit card for the deposits.

Choice 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.

Call Grimes County Jail at 936-873-2151 to confirm the address to send the money order to and how they want it made out.

Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.

Call 936-873-2151 to ask facility personnel who to make the money order out to, and where to send it.
