It is a low, two story building that houses up to 2665 inmates in double capacity cells with no more than two people in each.
The average stay is 7 days, and it is a fully functional satellite jail that provides full services and programs. It shares many of the same programs as the Main Jail, with GED programs, adult education, domestic violence education, creative arts, life skills, and a library.
Religious services are provided and inmates may choose to attend or not, as well as being provided with recreational activities both indoors and out. Social skills are a key to creating a positive environment, and they are practiced daily with other inmates as well as staff.
Full medical care is provided and the mental health professionals provide counseling and other services. Substance abuse treatments are available for those who need them, and all inmates are educated on the effects of substance use and how to prevent addiction.
All care is provided at Shelby County Jail East including the mental health and medical but also meals that are nutritious and contact with friends an family.
