Aurora Plains Academy offers residential treatment to youth who are aged 10 to 20 and require intensive treatment or rehabilitation. There is a total of 66 beds with 48 of them being for boys and 18 for girls, and they are accepted only if they are not successful in other treatment centers, they have a chronic history of physical or sexual aggression. Within the facility they maintain a higher ratio of staff members to students to accommodate for the increased concerns for safety that are present with these students, and they focus on rehabilitation, safety, and security. Before admission a set of treatment goals is created and provided to the parents, along with a date that they will begin their placement, and all of their medical, mental health, and other care will be arranged. This requires an admission packet, signed permission forms from the parents or guardians, and any medications and their prescriptions. Only those who are referred by the department of corrections or social services. Programs include Pathways to treat adolescent male sex offenders in a closed unit, Cognitive Intervention using group therapy and assignments to change thinking and improve decision making, and AODA for treating alcohol and other drug abuse. School occurs around the year with classes being arranged by age and their class grade at their original school. Mail: Any mail must be delivered according to the rules and regulations of the facility and must not contain and illegal or adult content. Phones: Parents may call their youth at the facility by using their housing unit number after 3pm, whent he school day ends. Phone calls are 10 minutes in length and will be in common areas that are monitored by staff. Visitation: Visits are available on weekends with two days advance notice to their case manager, and evening visits may be approved with a request from at least five business in advance. With approval a youth may be permitted to go home for a visit but will require supervision at all times by parents or legal guardian.
