In Fairfiled County, it’s cities and comunities, and several surrounding counties, the juvenile offenders between the ages of 11 and 18 are held at the South Carolina regional Juvenile Detention Center. It has a capacity for 72 students, both male and female, and separate housing units. When youth arrive their housing assignment is based upon their intake evaluation from the local evaluation centers or the detention centers intake process. It will be determined based on any violence in their history, concerns with prior detentions, gender, age, and other factors, allowing for the safest environment for all of the residents and staff. It is a secure building with staff who interact with the students throughout the day, cameras to check on activity in other areas, and medical staff to care for all medical concerns. Mental health professionals offer support in the form of counseling, group and individual, and provide the residents with the tools they need for a healthy future. All programs are designed to provide support for their future, guidance for making positive decisions, and becoming productive members of their community.
