About the Colleton County Detention Center
The Colleton County Detention Center is a small detention facility that serves the city of Walterboro, SC, as well as the surrounding county. It is operated by the local sheriff, and allows for detainees to remain within their own community during their incarceration. It serves as a housing facility for those who are awaiting a bond hearing, who have not made bond and are waiting for the trial to start, or who are finished their trial and beginning to serve their sentence. It houses minimum security, medium security, and maximum security inmates to meet the needs of all and to maintain a safe and secure environment for all inmates. By housing inmates separately based upon their assessed security needs, including their behavior since their arrival, the seriousness of the charges, previous criminal record, and considerations in keeping inmates who are being charged together in the same incident apart. For the mental health of inmates there are phone privileges each day that allow them to call and speak with their friends and family, as well as the opportunity to have visits. Visiting times are dependent upon the status of the inmate and the letter that their last name begins with. On Fridays, trustees have visiting hours from 9-10am, maximum security has visits Friday from 9am until 10pm, general population is on Saturday beginning with A through G from noon to 4, H through O on Saturday 12-4pm with P through Z will have visits on Sunday from 12 pm until 4pm.
