Charleston County, South Carolina has just completed a new juvenile detention center that moves the focus from detention and holding to rehabilitation for all juveniles who are awaiting their court dates or who have been adjudicated to a short sentence. Completed in 2023, the facility includes three classrooms, a library, recreational facilities, enhanced counselling and mental health spaces, and other additional amenities. With the new facility there will be improved access to counseling, both group and individual, and additional learning opportunities for developing life and social skills, along with more space for recreational activities and physical fitness. With access to all the necessities, there are many programs provided that will encourage residents to interact in positive ways with both staff and other residents, learn how to make positive decisions, developing the tools they will need for a successful future and to reduce recidivism. Mail: Residents are able to receive letters and to send letters, though all mail is subject to inspection for contraband before being delivered or with the receiver by a staff member. Phone: With phone privileges residents may call their parents or guardians regularly, at least one day each week, but they are unable to have incoming calls. Visitation: Visiting hours are provided at least one day each week and allow families to stay in contact and to see their child throughout their detention.
