The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice operates several facilities throughout the counties within, including regional evaluation centers, a juvenile detention center, and several alternatives to detention locations. With only one main juvenile detention center, there is a focus within the system to engage in alternatives and attempt to keep detention numbers low. Juveniles, both male and female, while they await their trial with the intended length of stay to be 30 days or less. It has a capacity of 72 youth, with a current request in place for a new facility to be built as a replacement. To support the juveniles while they are detained, all of whom are 11 to 18 years old, an evaluation is conducted to determine if they will be detained until their disposition or if they are able to wait at home. Those who are facing serious charges, charges involving violence, and those who are being held to ensure their own safety and the safety of the community will be held. They will be provided with all basic needs including shelter, clothing, healthy meals, medical care, and mental health care.
