York County Youth Development Center Information

Juvenile offenders in York County who are between the ages of 10 and 21 will find themselves detained at the York County Youth Development Center. All staff are trained in a treatment approach rather than focus on punishing, and programs are in place to help with rehabilitation, personal growth, skill development, and positive interactions. Providing emergency care and custody for all youth who require short term housing, who require close supervision, or who are remanded to the facility, will all receive their basic needs and care throughout their stay. Both male and female youth are housed at the facility, and they will also be supervised through the same programs for any probation, home monitoring, treatment programs, or other requirements. Offering alternatives to detention allow for youth to avoid any potential trauma caused by being separated from their parents, and staff with the detention unit focus on providing a positive environment, respectful and positive interactions, and encouraging positive decision making. Shelter residents will be able to leave the facility for community service projects including graffiti removal, educational events, networking, and litter removal, and other projects. Mail: Residents may receive mail through the postal service and are able to respond to that mail. No contraband, adult content, or illegal items are permitted in the mail. Phones: Phones are in place in common and living areas and may be accessed by all those with phone privileges, only to contact their immediate family including parents and guardians. Visitation: Only those who are approved for visits will be provided with the visiting days and times they may attend.
