Westmoreland County Regional Youth Center Information

With spaces for up to 16 alleged delinquents or adjudicated youth, the Westmoreland County Regional Youth Center accepts youth who are aged 10 to 21 years of age. Those who are in the facility beyond their 18th birthday will have been arrested and charged with things that occurred before that birthday and will remain as they finish their sentence or their trial. The shelter has 8 beds and is non secure, sharing a building with the secured detention but not having other interactions. Staff are focused on minimizing the negative effects of incarceration while supporting personal growth, social skills, positive interactions, and life skills. Common spaces are maintained in each of the living areas and include a TV lounge, library, outdoor basketball, outdoor open recreation space, indoor recreation, and more. Enrichment activities are provided in many forms, with programs to encourage independent living skills, job searches, apartment hunts, crafts, community service opportunities, and for those in the shelter program field trips may occur. Basic care is provided in the forms of food, shelter, clothing, and medical care, while others protect the rights of all residents, physical education occurs regularly, and security is maintained to protect the community, staff, and students. Mail: Residents may receive and send mail. It must be addressed with a full return address and correct postage. Any contraband will be removed. Phones: Phone calls are permitted during recreational hours, and youth can call parents, guardians, or other approved contacts. Visitation: Family visits are encouraged with parents or guardians, and they will be provided with the information to schedule visits during the intake process.
