The Schuylkill County Prison was built in 1851 and looks from the outside like a Gothic Castle. It is one of the oldest functioning jails in the United States and is a historic landmark. And it apparently is going to be around for a long time as there are no plans (as of 2023) to build a new one, other than some talk in past years to build a regional jail that serves both Schuylkill County and Berks County, as Berks is also overcrowded and was first built in 1933.
The Schuylkill County Prison is experiencing serious overcrowding, even having to 'triple-cell' inmates, and has been for over a decade. On any given day there are as many as 50 offenders that were arrested in Schuylkill County, being housed elsewhere. Typically, offenders that are sent to other jails are kept in Northumberland, Columbia, Centre, or Clinton Counties. Sometimes inmates are even sent to Goerge Hill Correctional Facility outside of Philadelphia. Women offenders are sometimes shipped to the Pennsylvania State Correctional Facility near Muncy in Lycoming County. Schuylkill County spends as much as $1,000,000 per year housing inmates elsewhere, at a cost of about $70 per day each. This does not include the cost to transport them back and forth, and the man hours needed.
Some of the ideas to reduce the overcrowding issue are Drug Courts, House Arrest and early release programs.

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Schuylkill County Prison uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Schuylkill County Prison first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
