The Mercer County Jail has a rated capacity of 311 beds, and in the last few years, they are keeping it below that amount, so even though it's full, it's not bursting with more inmates than they can handle. The jail was built in 2005 at a cost of about $25 million. The same jail today would cost three times that to construct.
Mercer County Jail is the first stop of any offenders or suspects who are arrested in Mercer County, and it is there that the booking process will take place. During the booking, a photo will be taken to serve as the mug shot, identifying marks will be recorded, personal property items are gathered and stored to be returned upon their release, and jail clothing will be provided. After this process has been completed inmates will be assigned to a housing unit and a cell, where they will create a list of people to be on their visitors list and another to be on their phone call list. Only individuals who are placed on either of these will be approved by the staff and permitted to receive phone calls or book visits to the jail.
The Mercer County Jail's staff is focused on maintaining the health and safety of all inmates as well as protecting the safety of those who are working within the jail. As short sentences may be served in this facility, both for cost effectiveness and also because staying close to the area of the arrest, inmates are more likely to have a support system in place that will help them to achieve success in their future release into society.
The Mercer County Sheriff's Office is responsible for transporting any inmates to and from their court dates, housing them at a location close to the jail for longer trials, as well as serving warrants and securing the courthouse.
Along with access to phones each day to call their friends and family, inmates are also encouraged to prepare for visits from their family and friends. Visits allow a reconnection between those who are incarcerated and their friends an family who are not. These visits are permitted Monday through Saturday and begin at 9 am and run until 8 pm. Each inmate may have two visits of one half hour each day, and only one adult visitor at a time. There is a waiting period of a week after their admission to the facility before visits will be granted, and a list of potential visitors must be provided by the inmate to the jail for approval before any visit is scheduled.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail also uses a digital service to help avoid contraband entering the facility. Friends and family of inmates in the Mercer County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. They can also send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.
All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below. If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 724-662-2700.
