Built to house the inmates who are arrested within the county, and to serve as the booking facility for the area. It processes over 2,000 bookings each year and has a capacity of 360 inmates of low and medium security needs. It houses only adults, either until the arraignment or to serve their sentence after trial, and while male and female inmates are kept separated from each other, any juveniles who are arrested will be taken to the local juvenile facility. This separation is key to the safety of both inmates and staff who work at the facility.
Inmates are permitted to make phone calls to their loved ones as well as their legal counsel, and they are able to send and receive mail as well as books or magazines that are sent directly from the publisher or supplier. Books must be paperback and cannot be sent from a home address.
Mail, including books, will be checked for contraband or inappropriate conversations, such as those of breaking laws, illegal activity, or escape. To provide for the day to day needs of the inmates, they have access to a commissary that sells writing supplies, hygiene products, and snacks, among other things.
Inmates are also provided with time to have visits each week, of 45 minutes each, during the visitation hours that are set for their housing unit. Each unit will receive visitors on different days to ensure that there is time and space for those who want visits to have them.
An online website represents the jail and provides access for adding funds to the accounts of inmates, to the phone service to allow inmates to call out, and lists all of the current inmates.
People can look through the current inmate roster to determine if their loved one is incarcerated in this facility or in another and will be able to then send a piece of mail or call the jail and request an update on their location and where in the process they are. Some information will not be handed out over the phone, but it is possible to locate and find the expected release date of the individual.
After an arrest, individuals are taken to Lycoming County Prison for the booking process, where their identity is confirmed, charges are reviewed, and decisions are made about whether they will be released on bail or detained.
The arrested individual should remain silent during booking, as anything said could be used against them. It’s important to wait for legal representation before answering questions.
