About the Juniata County Prison

In July of 2012 the Juniata County Prison was permanently closed and all inmates were transferred to a nearby location.

Currently all detainees from Juniata County are transported and housed at the Mifflin County Correctional Facility that is located in Lewiston, PA.

Before closing the Juniata jail has an average of 30-40 inmates in the population each day.

With a low population the costs per inmate were higher than in other locations, and it made maintaining the prison difficult, leading to its closure.
