Edmund L. Thomas Adolescent Center Information

The Edmund L Thomas Adolescent Center offers a range of programs and security services to the community for their juveniles. This is the location for the short term therapeutic residential programs, secure juvenile detention, and dependent shelter. Only the Court of Common Please or those who work for the court are able to authorize detention for youth, and it will accept those who are under the age of 18 and suspected of delinquent acts, or things that would be considered to be a criminal charge for an adult. Both male and female juveniles may be housed at the location, though they are separated at all times. Certified school staff attend the building each weekday to conduct classes and ensure that there is an ongoing education even during the summer, and all students must attend the classes until they graduate. Upon intake each of the students will receive a full screening for physical health, dental care needs, and an eye exam. A handbook is provided to each arrival, which contains the rules, routines, expectations, consequences, and other vital information. Mail: When mail is delivered it may be checked for contraband only, though it is not read by the staff. It must be delivered by the postal system and cannot be hand delivered to the building or given directly to the residents. Phones: During approved phone or recreation hours there are phones available for youth to contact their parents or guardians. Incoming calls are not available. Visitation: Family visits are a key part of the program and visiting hours are provided to the parents after intake for at least one visit each week.
