The Abraxas Academy is responsible for housing and rehabilitating juvenile offenders for Berks County and operates under a sanctuary model. Under this model a focus is maintained on community, accountability, and the seven commitments which include non-violence, emotional intelligence, social learning, democracy, open communication, social responsibility, and growth and change. Each of the youth will be assigned a case manager, that is responsible for their individual program and will be able to answer any parent questions regarding their child. Residents will participate in at least three meetings each day to communicate feelings, goals, develop relationships with staff and students, and check in with their progress and next steps. The staff and facility are also responsible for home monitoring, drug and alcohol treatments, electronic monitoring, probation services, and victims or witness advocates. During any term of detention, full care is provided to each of the juveniles including their meals and snacks, education equal to that of the public schools, laundry services and cleaning, supervision for safety and security, and any medical or mental health care that is required.
