On the Linn County Sheriff’s Office website there is a complete roster of each inmate that is in custody, their age, their mug shot, and information on their charges. This list is updated several times throughout each day for the most up to date information. This can be a key tool to locating an offender who has been arrested, and show where to pay their bail or schedule a visit.
Opened in 1989, it began with 114 beds that were to take the place of the previous 24 beds housed within the courthouse. As the population grew there were additional beds added in 1995 by doubling the beds in each cell and creating dual occupancy cells. Shortly after an additional wing opened that held 2 more cellblocks which each had 48 cells and the result was 230 beds in the facility. During budget changes one of the newer cell blocks is closed, reopened as needed, which results in the removal or addition of 48 cells and a maximum capacity of 230 beds when all wings are open and operating. Both misdemeanors and felonies are processed through this facility, and housing is arranged to keep the most dangerous offenders in separate blocks from minor those facing minor charges. Throughout 2020 the average population of the jail from day to day was 156 inmates of all genders and facing a wide range of charges.
To maintain connections there is mail both in and out of the jail permitted, within the strict guidelines provided on the website linssheriff.org. Mail that is not correctly labelled, that contains prohibited materials or topics, or has contraband, will be refused and not delivered to the inmate. Both regular visitation and phone calls are permitted during daytime hours and on the approved schedule. Any visitors must be on the approved visitor list and have scheduled visits, which can be booked the day prior to the visitation day. Visits are allowed from 7 am until 12 pm and 1 pm to 4:30 pm, and each block has a set time within those hours on set days. To ensure that the hours are appropriate and to ensure you are aware of which day and time, call the jail at 541-812-9212 to confirm the hours and book. Visits are each 30 minutes long and every inmate is permitted a maximum of 2 hours in visits each week. Phones are provided to allow contact to continue beyond the visits that are received. Voicemail is available at any time, while outgoing calls can be placed during daytime hours and time out at 20 minutes per call. Funds may be added to an account through the kiosk in the lobby or through ViaPath’s access page.
Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. Friends and family of inmates in the Linn County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.
All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below. If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 541-967-3901.
