Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center Information

The Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center is the local facility to house any juvenile offenders who are arrested on a warrant, for committing a delinquent act, or if they are a runaway or at risk of leaving before their court date. To provide the best rehabilitation efforts, school is held each of the weekdays for 5 ½ hours, except on holidays. The schooling follows the local public schools to allow for grade maintenance. Self-improvement groups and activities are held regularly, as well as supportive counseling, crisis intervention, and crisis management, with family consultation available. Full medical services are provided including handing out daily medications or prescriptions provided, coordinating with care providers and pharmacists, a physical exam after two weeks of detention and again as needed. Recreation time is provided throughout each day, including physical education, physical fitness, group activities, sports, and others. Reading and relaxation time is also provided, along with adequate time for rest and sleep. Strict rules and routines are in place to encourage discipline, maintain safety for staff and residents, and to provide guidance through the days. Mail: Mail is delivered by the postal service each weekday, and will be delivered to the juvenile quickly after, with a delay only if it is determined that it requires inspection for safety or security, and to remove any contraband. Phones: Calls are permitted, and youth will have access to phones to call parents, guardians, and immediate family who reside in the same home. Visitation: Monday - Friday: 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Saturday / Sunday / Holidays & Non-School Days: 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 1:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Parents, guardians, and immediate family who reside in the same house as the juvenile may visit.

Newspapers may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
