About the Portage County Jail

The Portage County Jail is a 218 bed medium-maximum security facility in Ravenna, Ohio. The jail actually underwent an expansion several years ago, adding 149 beds and bringing the new capacity to 367 beds, but for some reason, most probably staff funding issues, never opened it. The Sheriff has been trying to get the county voters to approve a tax increase to fund the staffing of the facility, but has so far not had any luck with his effort. The Portage County Jail has been open since 1990. That said, the jail is always overcrowdd because 218 beds are not enough.

With space for both male and female inmates, the sprawling building covers a large area of land and is surrounded by razor wire fencing. The Portage County Jail is located at 8240 Infirmary Road in Ravenna, OH 44266 and can be reached 24 hours a day by calling 330-297-3891. You can call to get inmate information such as the inmate's ID #, which you will need to write them a letter.  You can also get bond information, which you will need if you want to get them released during the pre-trial process, which can stretch on for months.

You can also look up an offender's Criminal Court cases as follows: Portage County Common Pleas Court, and the Portage County Municipal Court, and these are the Court Schedules for both courts.

To assist with daily boredom, there are two work programs available at this facility. The sewing program has a sewing instructor attend the jail three days each week and teaches the inmates how to sew on several sewing machines. During this program they create uniforms for the inmates who are being held in the facility. The work program allows inmates to work in some areas of the jail as well as for nonprofit organizations. They wash and wax the county vehicles, clean the facility, take care of the lawn surrounding the buildings, work on carpentry projects, and complete some maintenance on the facility. This encourages a feeling of inclusion within the jail community and a sense of responsibility. Having tasks to complete benefits inmates in several ways and also helps to keep the jail running smoothly.

ICS Solutions has an app that allows for easy visitation, phone calls and funding of accounts, or it can be accessed through the website icsolutions.com. Video Visits can be both at the facility or from a visitor's home. Refer to the Visitation Schedule below this section or on our Visitation page.

When the courthouse is closed for the day an inmate's bond can be paid at the jail directly. Those who are being released on bond will require a time for processing before they can leave, but this is a shorter process than when they are booked in after arrest.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. Friends and family of inmates in the Portage County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. Friends and family can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 330-297-3891.
