About the Surry County Detention Center

The new Surry County Detention Center, finished in January 2024, includes a new 911 center, a new magistrate’s office. The “old jail” portion of the center, will be used for storage, while the newer portion can be used for temporary housing for inmates coming in and out of court hearings. The new jail has a 360-bed capacity and will leave additional space to expand.

They could accommodate as many as 450 with the expansion space. Surry County is located in central NC - near Mt. Airy, the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry, where Andy Griffith grew up.

The detention center has eight 47-bed general population units for men, plus two 8-bed special management units. For women, there are two 31-bed housing units.

The Surry County Detention Center originally consisted of two sections, the old jail and the addition that was added in 2002, allowing it to hold up to 125 inmates. A new building was begun in 2021 and when it is completed it will more than double the capacity, which will end the need for housing inmates in other counties, allowing them to await trial or to serve their sentence within their own community and close to their family and friends.

Other changes include the recent addition of a work reentry program, which provides the opportunity to work with Wayne Farms to help inmates find employment after release. Each of the offenders who qualify will receive full training and follow up with the support specialist to ensure they are fitting in well with the rules and regulations and maintaining their employment.

While incarcerated at Surry County Detention Center it will be necessary for inmates to have access to medical care, so after their booked there is an assessment completed that determines their housing assignment, medical needs, mental health programs needed, any rehabilitation, education, and substance or anger management programs.

Any term of incarceration can be used to learn new skills or to develop social skills, and to gain knowledge or treatment in order to have a better chance of success, to lower recidivism rates through accesses the reentry programs, and remaining in contact with outside supports such as family and friends is one of the ways to stay positive and plan a productive future.

Mail can be sent to inmates at any time, and it will be delivered on weekdays after having been checked for contraband and is sent to:
