Richmond Juvenile Detention Center Information

Serving the surrounding area and communities by offering secure housing for juveniles after arrest and until they are released or transferred, the Richmond-Jenkins Juvenile Detention Center offers safety and security to all residents. A strict schedule is maintained that includes time for self-care, recreational time, classes, life skills learning opportunities, chances to practice and develop social skills, and treatment for addictions, mental health, and medical needs. Schooling is created to mirror the local public schools so all students remain up to date with their education and can transfer easily back to their school, food services follow the nutrition guides in place for school breakfast and lunch programs, and additional programing supports personal growth and development. Each resident is provided with counseling or therapy as needed, will receive full medical treatment for both emergent and ongoing issues, and will interact regularly with the staff. During any length of detention, court dates will be scheduled periodically to consider alternatives to detention while awaiting adjudication. Only where alternaives or diversions are not appropriate, have failed before, or are unavailable will detention continue.
