New Hanover Regional Juvenile Detention Center has a total of 18 beds for juvenile offenders and juvenile delinquents who are determined to require the most secure detention provided for youth. The facility offers intensive treatments and rehabilitation, addressing addictions, emotional regulation, and both physical and mental health. Those who have extensive delinquency records, who are committed for charges including violent acts, or who are unable to be housed in alternatives for their own safety or the safety of others. Each of the juveniles who are committed to the facility, are waiting for a court date, or who are finishing their program to be released, will be provided with a program and goals that are based upon their intake assessment, and is designed to specifically address their needs. This will include mental health care, medical care, life and social skills programming, and education that is equal to the public school. As a self-sufficient campus it contains a full kitchen producing health meals, medical treatment areas, classrooms, and recreational spaces. It serves the local area, including the county in which it is located but also surrounding communities, serving the whole region.
