It is a large brick building that stretches low and wide.
The full kitchen provides all meals, the medical wing provides full medical care, and visitation spaces are provided. It is at the Madison County Jail that all offenders, both misdemeanor and felony, male and female, will be housed as they wait for their trial or to be transferred after sentencing.
To locate an inmate the online roster may be accessed at any time and staff are able to answer questions about the presence of an offender, bail procedures, visitation, and others when you call 828-649-2721. The building was completed after a fire in 1996, with the intent to meet the needs of the inmates as well as the growing needs of the community.
Inmates are unable to communicate with anyone who is incarcerated in other housing units unless they are in a group activity, may not contact other detention centers or inmates at them, and may not send or receive mail from other inmates or those who have been recently released from any detention center.
Others may send mail to the inmate at the jail using the USPS, it will be delivered on a weekday and responses are picked up weekdays as well, after being checked for contraband.
Phone banks are found in each of the housing units, and they make it possible for inmates to make outgoing calls to their friends or family but are not able to accept incoming calls. Visits are available via video at least once each week and can be scheduled in advance.
