Durham Youth Detention Information

Operated by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, the Durhan Youth Detention Center has 14 beds and accepts both male and female juveniles. This is a secure facility for those who are waiting for a court date, who are being held for the safety of themselves or the community, or those who are sentenced to a term of detention and are waiting for transfer to a long term facility. Before being assigned to any housing unit, there is an assessment during the intake process, that will be used to create a program for that juvenile. The assessment including educational assessment to determine grade level and necessary accommodations or testing including GED testing, a medical assessment to arrange any prescriptions to be delivered to create care plans for all medical needs, a mental health assessment to create a treatment plan, and the determination of any substance use or abuse that can be addressed as well. Each program is designed to support the needs of the student and to provide opportunities for treatment and education, as well as supporting personal growth, development of life skills, and improving social skills. As a secure facility there is a high level of security and officers interact with the students daily. Mail: 2432 Broad Street, Durham, NC 27704 Mail is delivered by the postal service and must have both an address and return address to be delivered.
