Cabarrus Youth Development Center Information

Along with housing male juveniles who are arrested, waiting for a court date, or waiting to be transferred, the Cabarrus Youth Development Center has an extensive history. It was developed in 1906 and consists of 60 buildings and structures on 100 acres, with only 23 of those being in use today. It has 96 beds to house juveniles, and the operational portion is fenced off from the rest, with several outer buildings existing as historical landmarks. As the most restrictive option, the youth who are committed to the facility are for an indefinite period that is most often more than 6 months, and they must be over 10 years of age and up to 18 years of age. If a youth is committed as a juvenile and requires a longer program, they may remain in the location until their 19th or 21st birthday if there was a violent offense. An assessment is conducted to provide the information for the staff to create a program, offer needed medical care, to create mental health care plans, and to offer the education that fits their current grades and needs. Treatments and interventions are used to assist in moving past any addictions or substance use issues, to help heal trauma, and counseling is provided for all students.
