About the Yaphank Correctional

With a top capacity of 976, the Yaphank Correctional Facility houses both male and female inmates and has specialty housing pods for specific demographics to offer the support they need.

For minimum security inmates there are dormitory housing pods, with several bunk beds or other bedding situated in one open space with bathrooms attached. Medium security and maximum security inmates are more likely to be housed in the podular housing units which offer several single or double occupancy cells that surround a common area where they will have tables, phones, shower rooms, and other necessary amenities.

Renovations and expansion saw the facility add 318,000 square feet in a modern design with windows allowing in natural light, state of the art treatment options in the medical area. Upgraded technology is in place around the building, including the central control as well as the control station that are in each of the pod units to provide direct supervision throughout the day. Open spaces make it feel less closed in and claustrophobic than other facilities and has created space for additional inmates to be housed safely and in sanitary conditions.

Along with a Veteran's Pod and a pod for those who are aged 55+, Addictions Treatment Program, and the Choose to Thrive Program are all operated at this facility. A photography program offers opportunities to grow new skills, and as that was a success there have been additional programs added allowing inmates to leave the facility with useful and employable skills.

To improve the mental health of inmates they are encouraged to remain in contact with their family and support system outside of the facility and includes sending and receiving mail at:
