About the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility

The current Rensselaer County Correctional Facility, first occupied in 2011, has a rated capacity of 473 beds.  It is a state of the art facility, with 12 housing pads, each holding 40-60 inmates. The pod is overseen by a single correctional officer. The large number of pods allows for the jail to keep gang members, as well as minimum, medium and maximum security clasification inmates separate. The total square footage of the Sheriff's Department and the Correctional facility is 250,000 square feet, the size of a typical Walmart.

The Rensselaer County Correctional Facility is located at 4000 Main Street in Troy, NY 12180. You can reach someone 24 hours a day by phoning 518-266-1730. Call to get information on an inmate, including their Inmate ID#, which you will need to send them mail or have other authorized items shipped to them.

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, which was established in 1791, is the main law enforcement in the county, responsible for all arrests, warranty service, traffic safety, and the operation of the county jail. The Rensselaer County Correctional Facility is a full service jail that offers all of the needed basic care items, medical care, mental health support, addictions treatments, balanced meals, and the opportunity to exercise and have access to recreational activities. Each of these is aimed to assist in rehabilitation and reduce recidivism. The location no longer allows for personal items to be dropped off at the front window, however there are items such as underclothes and paperback books that are permitted to be delivered directly from the seller.

The Rensselaer County Correctional Facility does not have an official online Inmate Search tool or Jail Roster, you can always call the jail, go to Vinelink to search, or you can sign in to one of the inmate services referenced below to confirm if the jail is holding an individual. To look up future court dates for an inmate, go to the New York State Web Criminal website.

All visitors must arrive 30 minutes before their appointment and bring identification with them. Visiting hours occur every day with short breaks for cleaning and changing the visitors and inmates. As visits are first come first served there is no need to schedule in advance.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly. Friends and family of inmates in the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility can also communicate using an online text/email system, send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.
