Nassau County Juvenile Detention Center Information

Offering detention services for youth who are waiting for their court case in Family Court or District Court, the facility accepts those who are over 10 years old and as old as 16 on a probation violation. The average age of residents is 14-17, and they are often held for an average of 14 days. As a short term facility youth will only remain in the facility until the final disposition of their case, after which they are released to their community, put on parole, or transferred to an agency that offers long term care. There are approximately 250 juveniles admitted each year, and they will receive full care during their stay. As the residents are children there is a focus on creating a positive environment, that is focused on care and nurturing rather than punishment, improving the mental health of both the residents and the staff and allowing for the youth to rehabilitate or have personal growth and development that is lasting. To meet their needs, education is provided on par with local schools, counseling is available, medical and dental care are both provided, and nutritious meals and snacks are served to all residents during the day.
