For minimum security inmates there are dormitory housing pods, with several bunk beds or other bedding situated in one open space with bathrooms attached. Medium security and maximum security inmates are more likely to be housed in the podular housing units which offer several single or double occupancy cells that surround a common area where they will have tables, phones, shower rooms, and other necessary amenities.
Renovations and expansion saw the facility add 318,000 square feet in a modern design with windows allowing in natural light, state of the art treatment options in the medical area. Upgraded technology is in place around the building, including the central control as well as the control station that are in each of the pod units to provide direct supervision throughout the day. Open spaces make it feel less closed in and claustrophobic than other facilities and has created space for additional inmates to be housed safely and in sanitary conditions.
Along with a Veteran's Pod and a pod for those who are aged 55+, Addictions Treatment Program, and the Choose to Thrive Program are all operated at this facility. A photography program offers opportunities to grow new skills, and as that was a success there have been additional programs added allowing inmates to leave the facility with useful and employable skills.

The Yaphank Correctional allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature.

Inmates are allowed to receive newspapers, but only through the mail, direct from the publisher.
Magazines
Inmates are allowed to have magazine subscriptions. Inmates are allowed to have up to five magazines in their possession at any given time. Magazines must not promote illegal activities, violence or anything else deemed a security risk.
Books
Inmates are allowed to receive soft-cover books only. They MUST come from a third-party vendor such as Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com. Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Yaphank Correctional standards will be disposed of.
