Operated alongside the Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklynn, the Horizon Juvenile Center is in Bronx, NY, and offers secure detention for juveniles who are charged with offences or acts of delinquency in the area. At the intake there will be an assessment that addresses each of the factors that will design the program for the individual youth, including an educational assessment providing their grade and educational needs, social services assessment to determine what services and treatments will be best, as well as the medical needs of the youth. At this time the parents and family will also be contacted to gather necessary information, have consent forms and documents signed, and to provide information on phone call access and visitations. Completing a full intake assessment provides the center with the information to provide the necessary educational, medical, dental, and mental health care that they require throughout their detention. Also provided are three meals and snacks throughout the day, with the option of peanut butter or cream cheese and jam sandwiches for an alternative to each meal, with fruit being provided as well. Recreation and other activities also occur regularly, and youth are encouraged to engage in them. Community involvement is also encouraged with presentations, motivational speeches, and development programs. Postcards
The Horizon Juvenile Center allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. It is best to only use blue or black ink. Always include your name and return address.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Horizon Juvenile Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Horizon Juvenile Center standards will be disposed of.
