It works with both local, state and federal agencies as needed, and houses inmates for the sheriff, local police departments, the New Mexico Department of Corrections, and federal agents, directly after arrest and until they have finished their sentence, been transferred, or have been released for other reasons.
The new building was finished in 2000 and has a top capacity of 590 inmates. As a full service facility, it can house long term innates, and includes a juvenile section for youth offenders.
Each of the staff maintain a focus on keeping a safe and secure environment that allows both staff and inmates to feel safe while they are within the building. All of the inmates needs are met including clothing, food services, laundry, bedding, commissary purchases for hygiene items and snacks, along with other items, recreation and exercise, and the ability to remain in contact with their friends and family who are not incarcerated. Additional programming is in place to help inmates to improve their lives after their sentence, and these include the Batters Intervention Program, Chances Program, Hope Recovery, Matrix Group, and Stress and Anxiety Management.
Families are able to offer their support to inmates in many ways, the first of which is to send them items through the commissary. They can choose items that will assist the inmates in a better experience and have them delivered with the regular commissary purchases. In addition, each inmate will have their own account that money can be deposited to in order to support their own purchases, phone calls, video calls, and more. Jailatm.com allows people to send money directly to inmates, and if there are any funds remaining when they are released it will be provided to them.
Visits are also encouraged and will be permitted on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am until 10:40am, as well as 1pm to 5pm. An account can be created online and visits booked.
