⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessWith a top capacity of 432 inmates, this large detention facility Lea County Detention Center is located within Lovington, Lea County and houses both male and female offenders, and also has a juvenile wing for the young offenders of the county, which can hold 25. A typical day at the detention center has 300 county inmates, 10 juveniles and about 100 federal inmates awaiting trial. It stays full.
In addition to the local Sheriff’s Office, the Lea County Detention Center also works with the US Marshal Service and federal law enforcement. Staff are focused on treating all inmates with respect and kindness, working towards an environment that provides space for positive personal growth and allows inmates to gain skills that will help with their successful reintegration.
Both GED and ESL classes are provided, along with regular haircuts, access to showers daily, support groups, rehabilitation efforts for substance abuse and parenting are available along with other educational programs.
Medical staff provide full medical care, and mental health professionals are available for counseling and other mental health support, while food services ensure three healthy meals and commissary and provides additional food options along with hygiene items and recreational items.
Inmates are also provided with ways to contact their friends and family through a mail program, phones, and visits.

... and it should be expected that it be checked for contraband upon arrival and before leaving the building as well as avoid conversations of illegal activity and there is no mail between detention facilities.
Phone accounts are available to allow inmates to make outgoing calls to home phones of their loved ones and stay up to date on their lives while also keeping their family up to date on what is happening with them and their progress, which improves the mental health of both sets of people. When inmates are able to keep that contact it has been seen that there are fewer incidents in the facility and the inmates are safer, have better results, and will have lower recidivism rates.
Visits are currently video based and can be accessed online, with a wide availability of approved visiting hours every day of the week. Saturday and Sunday visits are 8am-10am, 1pm-5pm, and 5:30pm-6:30pm, and Monday through Friday 1pm-2pm and 5:30pm-6:30pm.
Tablets are also being integrated that will permit emails and messages, photos, and calls, as well as provide access to ebooks and libraries along with other media.
Once arrested, the person is taken to Lea County Detention Center for booking, a process that confirms identity, assesses charges, and determines if they will be released on their own recognizance, posted for bail, or held until court.
Staying silent is key during this process, as anything spoken can be used as evidence in court. It’s best to wait for legal counsel before responding to questions.

Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.
