About the Cumberland County New Jail

The Cumberland County Jail is located at 54 W. Broad Street  in Bridgeton, NJ 08302, and can be reached 24 hours a day by calling 856-453-4894. It is made of up three different sections; all with different on-site visitation schedules, but share the same schedules for online video visitation, inmate money account deposits and the inmate phone system. They are this, the New Jail, the Main Jail, and what is referred to as the Main Jail Annex.

They also share the same online Inmate Search tool, which includes mugshots, criminal charges and other personal information of each inmate housed in the county.

The total number of available beds for inmates is 350, but due to the age of the facility, and keeping violent prisoners and those with mental issues apart, it is rare that the entire three sections of jail house more than 290 inmates at any one time. Recently the Cumberland County Jail has been housing up to 60 inmates in the Hudson County Adult Correctional Center in Kearny, New Jersey, and the county also has loose agreements with the SalemCape May and Burlington County jails to accept inmates for housing when needed.

The inmates that are housed in Hudson County are offered the same services, with the same third-party companies, including access to phones to call their family or friends, and visitation both by video and in person, that Cumberland County inmates can access. These services are offered to assist the inmates in maintaining their connections to those outside of the jail, who will help them to reintegrate after their incarceration and to maintain mental health during their sentence. Inmates may be housed here both before their trial and while serving their sentence.

In 2019 the Cumberland County Jail borrowed $65 million to build a new 400 bed facility in Bridgeton, adjacent to the New Jersey Department of Corrections South Woods Prison. They bought the land, prepared the site, poured the concrete, spending a total of $13 million, and then for some reason gave up on the project, leaving the general contractor in the lurch, who is now suing the county for $5 million he is owed for his work. The plane was to build this new facility on S. Burlington Road in Bridgeton, then tear down the existing three jails in the downtown, and then build a new holding facility next to the courthouse, which would have solved all of their housing and logistics issues, but it was scrapped.

In addition, while the construction was going on, to solve their inadequate housing issue, they were to send up to 256 inmates to the Atlantic County Justice Facility to do their time, but at the last minute in February of 2022, Atlantic County decided they didn't have the room and pulled that deal.

History of the Cumberland County Jail

Historically speaking, the current jail complex is the fourth jail in in Cumberland County. The collection of connected structures that make up the Cumberland County Jail were built over a period of 30 years, but the jail as it stands today was first built in 1970, with the 'New Jail' being added in 1977, and then the Annex was added in 1985.

The very first jail in Cumberland County was actually built in 1748, a small, single-story log cabin with four primitive cells. The county then built their second jail, a two-story structure in 1790 and this stayed operational until 1867, when the third jail was built, which housed prisoners until the 1950s, and was eventually decommissioned in 1969.
