Addressing the needs of the surrounding population, the Douglas County Youth Detention Center focuses on education and development. It is built to be secure, and to protect the safety of the community, the staff, visitors, and each of the youth in residence. A structured environment is maintained with a schedule that operates each day and includes time for tasks, self-care, school, programing, recreation, physical education, vocational training, and a system of accountability. Residents are encouraged to engage in activities, participate in learning opportunities, and learn how to make more positive choices that will lead to a successful and productive future. Teamwork is encouraged through group projects and is rewarded. Staff interact with the juveniles daily and show an example of respect and positive social interactions. Sticking to the strict schedule encourages the development of discipline and responsibility, as well as helping to develop skills and habits in managing their time outside of the facility. Mail: Mail is only accepted when it comes with a full address, complete return address and name of sender, through the post office. Phones: Residents are given one free call each day to their parent or guardian only and will use the collect call system. Visitation: Only parents, guardians, grandparents, and siblings over 18 years old are permitted to visit, for one half hour twice a week. One of these visits will be on the weekend and the other on a weekday.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Douglas County Youth Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Douglas County Youth Center standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
