The Juvenile Office in Cape Girardeau serves the counties of Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, and Perry. It provides a safe community, a secure environment, and positive examples for all of the juveniles who are being detained on charges of delinquency, who are assigned to the care and protection of the juvenile division, or who need emergency housing as they wait for transfer to an alternative housing option. School classes are taught during the week and attendance is mandatory, as well as time for hygiene, cleaning their own space, recreation time, and physical education. Positive social interactions are encouraged, and staff interact daily with the juveniles in a positive, encouraging, and respectful way. Mail, phone calls, and visits are provided to maintain connections with family and to offer support for the juveniles during their term of detention. Healthy meals are provided each day, three meals and a snack, and the laundry is done regularly to ensure that they are receiving the basic care for their needs, as well as dental and medical care. Prescriptions will be provided as directed on the medication, and new medication may be prescribed as required for any infections or other concerns that occur during detention. Counseling may be provided as needed to support the mental health of all residents.
