Pike County Juvenile Detention has the capacity to house up to 85 youth at any one time, and they accept both male and female juveniles. Juveniles can only be admitted to the facility by law enforcement after an arrest or by the juvenile court at their adjudication. Those who are residing in the facility are there while they wait for their court date and detention hearing or while they are fulfilling a commitment to the location from the court. After an arrest they will only be detained if they are unlikely to return for their hearing, if they are at risk of harming themselves or others, or if they are in need of a safe space to stay. School continues during detention in the classrooms that are onsite with licensed teachers, and there is a medical space for all medical treatment, space for dental care, and mental health professionals are onsite to provide any needed counseling or therapies. Housing units are determined by age, gender, seriousness of charges, past detention history, and which is expected to be the best fit for each individual. Units attend class, physical education, recreation activities, and other events together.
