Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Information

Only juveniles who have been arrested for an act of delinquency, who are assigned to the detention center, and who are being held for their own safety, are admitted to the Lowndes County Juvenile Detention. The Youth Court will determine when detention is necessary as it hears cases of children in need of supervision, delinquency, and neglected or abused children, all of whom are under the age of 18. All youth are represented by an attorney, and for those who are unable to pay for an attorney a public defender is provider. The Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Center has space for 25 youth, who are housed in units that are organized by their age, size, gender, reason for detention, and past history of detention. During their detention there will be a focus on education, gaining life and social skills, positive decision making, and health and safety. Common areas provide space for recreation and physical education, while classrooms provide space for the teachers who attend onsite to work with each resident individually to complete the assignments and lessons that correspond to their regular school. Mail: Only mail delivered through the post office will be accepted, with a complete address, full return address, and name of sender. If there is reason to believe contraband may be present in any letter it may be opened with the juvenile and inspected before they are permitted to take it. Phones: Phones are provided for calls to parents and guardians throughout the week. Only outgoing calls are available. Visitation: To schedule a visit the facility should be contacted directly, with only approved visitors such as parents or guardians being permitted to visit. Other visitors may be approved by the probation officer or the courts.
