In July 2022, a federal judge placed the detention center under receivership due to the risk of unconstitutional harm to detainees and staff. The jail requires 248 staff members to function, but has been getting by with only 175 for some time now. Doors don't close properly, and it's literally falling apart. Many pretrial detainees have been locked inside the Hinds detention facilities for many months and even years before ever going to trial, due to systemic backlogs throughout the Hinds County judicial system.
The center has faced chronic understaffing and structural deficiencies since its opening in 1994. There have been reports of structural deficiencies, chronic staff shortages, and violence at the facility. The facility has a 600-bed capacity, but regularly holds up to 700 inmates.
The good news is that in March 2022, Hinds County leaders announced a new jail would be sson built located on West McDowell Road next to the Henley-Young Juvenile Justice Center. The new facility will house 600 to 700 beds.
