Housing up to 16 juveniles who are under the age of 18 years old, the Alcorn County Juvenile Detention Center offers safe and secure housing for those who are being detained for their own safety or for the safety of community members, who are facing charges of delinquency, or who are waiting for their adjudication. Both short and long term housing is provided, with many of the youth waiting for their court dates, but also housing those who have been committed to detention or treatment programs. There is a full staff that operates around the clock, and medical staff provide all medical care including providing prescription medication as required, a dentist provides dental care, and mental health professionals provide counseling, group and individual, and can provide behavioral therapy as needed. To meet the nutritional needs of the resident the kitchen staff follow the guidelines for meals at the schools, and all other basic needs are provided as well including laundry and cleaning, meals, recreational time, and physical education. Responsibility is developed through the detention, and they will learn new life skills including anger management, household finances, social skills, and other educational needs. School classes occur during the week and attendance is mandatory, provided by the local school board and licensed teachers in the classrooms onsite.
