About the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center

The Hennepin County Adult Detention Center, also known as the Hennepin County Jail, is located on two sides of the street. They are separate buildings but operate as one.

Located downtown, the brick structure is easily spotted by its unusual shape and build tin carport out front, and the slotted windows that mark all sides of the building. Windows are large enough to let in daylight but not large enough to be a safety concern for inmates within or the community surrounding it.

There is a top capacity of 755, and a updated plan has seen inmates be released hours earlier if the decision to press charges has not yet been made to reduce overcrowding and prevent it from occurring in future. This program has seen many first time offenders and misdemeanor charges having people incarcerated less, and has significantly decreased the number who are in the jail on average each day, keeping them under the top capacity and saving cost on overtime and other expenses.  Increasing and improving alternatives to detention has also become a focus and is showing positive results.

Inmates are taken across the road for their court dates and will stay in cells at the small offsite location for their court, and then return to the jail immediately afterwards. Mentoring is provided to inmates from volunteers who attend regularly, spiritual counseling is provided when requested, and there are support groups including AA, parenting classes, prevention of drug abuse and alcohol abuse, support for battered women, and other programs for educational purposes. The HOPE program, for Helping Others by Providing Education, considers jail to be a place where lives can be changed and an opportunity to create positive change in the lives of inmates by providing education and training during incarceration. It also supports their reentry after their release and help to support them as they rejoin their community.

For further support, inmates remain in contact with their friends and family through the use of phone calls, which are only made by the inmate and cannot be made into the facility, or by sending mail or packages (books must be direct from publisher) to:

(Inmate's full name)
Hennepin County Public Safety Facility
401 South 4th Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55415

Visits are also provided through video visitation, each lasting up to 20 minutes for $4.00, with each inmate being allowed 3 visits per week. These are conducted through the Securus app and will begin once an account has been created and the visit booked at least 24 hours in advance. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday 10:30am-4pm and 7pm-9:30pm and on Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm and 7am-7pm.
